Running

I will be going to graduations for the rest of my life.

Hi friends! Man this week flew by fast (in a good way)!

Pretty excited for Friday cause another cousin is graduating from high school! He’s the little one on the far right.

I will be going to high school and college graduations for the rest of my life. Seriously. I have 1 in 2015, 2 in 2016, 1 in 2017, 4 in 2018. Then my youngest cousins sometime around 2023 and then my kids at some point. I should invest in a good set of bleacher seat pads for when my ass hangs lower than my knees.

Tuesday WORKOUT:

50 min. tempo run.

It was going great until around mile 3, when I realized I was dehydrated. My middle (faster) miles ended up being slower than I wanted because I’m an idiot who can’t remember the simplest of things: drink water. When I got home I immediately drank coconut water with IN Refresh mixed in. I actually like the taste of that more than when it is mixed in with water!

And now, I want to talk about sleep. I know how important sleep is for recovery and just overall health, yet I don’t get enough. I am curious to see how many hours/night you kiddos average. If you’re interested, Runner’s World has a great article on sleep and runners that I read a little while ago. And if you don’t want to, here’s the CliffNotes version: run hard + sleep more = recover

Ryan Hall pens naps in his calendar as “business meetings,” and both Deena Kastor and Shalane Flanagan log as much as 10 hours of shut-eye a night. They clearly understand what science is increasingly revealing: It’s during sleep that your body recovers from hard training and builds you into a better runner.

I’m bringing this topic up because I recently got a FitBit (huge thank you to Kyle’s mama) and one of the cool features is that it tracks your sleep. I knew that I was always tired and that I could probably use more sleep, but it’s different when you see the actual numbers.

I have been averaging  6.5 hr/night and that’s with my weekend sleeps which are almost always longer. The FitBit also tracks restlessness and awake time. I know it’s probably not the most accurate thing, but it does give me a rough idea.

fitbit sleep

I’m no expert, but me thinks I don’t get enough sleep.

Clearly I am the worst person to sleep next to. I roll around a lot and have been known to wake up completely turned around (my head at the foot of my bed).

When I used to have sleepovers with my girl friends, I’d often offer to sleep on the floor or couch or something. Not fun to wake up to people hating your guts for rolling on top of them in the middle of the night.

All I can say is, good luck Kyle.

Anyone do a tempo run this week?

How many hours/night do you sleep?

Are you a restless sleeper?

  1. I’d love to track my sleep for a few weeks and check but I feel like I get a ton of sleep even though I wake up super easily. Somehow, I wake up from the tiniest noise but I never roll around in my sleep or am restless, I’m either asleep or awake 100%. All these graduations make me laugh because I haven’t been to any graduation other than my high school one, I skipped both college and grad school graduations and haven’t been to any for anyone else either!

    1. Oh man I’m sure Kyle would appreciate it if I didn’t roll haha. I take up more room in a bed than he does (and I’m 5’1″ and he’s 6’2″). Whatttt? LOL that’s a foreign concept to me- not having graduations to attend. I’ll let you go for me for one of them so I can get a break 😉

  2. no tempo runs for me — i’ve been suuuuupa sore this week so only run once so far and plan to again tomorrow and Saturday. i’m so exhausted by the time i get into bed that i usually am a pretty sound sleeper but sometimes i wake up to eat in the middle of the night lately — realllly not a good luck. i like to sleep 7-8 hours (and more on wknds if i can!). 🙂

  3. I would love to have a fitbit more to know how much sleep I am getting versus activity. With two little ones I know my sleep is not adequate! Some nights I’m up 2-3 times between both girls but when I do get a full nights sleep is awesome! ha ha. My daughters are beyond restless sleepers – kicking and elbowing all night long!!!!!

No tempo runs for me either. Been doing some other workouts and managed a 2 mile run at a gym yesterday.

  4. I attempted a tempo run yesterday morning, but my route was really hilly so it didn’t go quite as planned. Plus it’s SO HUMID. It’s going to take me a little bit to get used to this new weather.

Sleep is a big problem for me. I know I don’t get enough, especially since having B I feel like I’m almost half awake all the time keeping an ear out for her. Sometimes I’ll take an Epsom salt bath or a melatonin when I know I don’t have to hurry in the morning, but that is definitely not an all-the-time type fix for it. I have gotten better recently and am getting maybe 6.5 – 7 hours as opposed to the 5 I was getting before. O_o

    PS. I love your overalls.

    1. Oh man I don’t know how you kiddos deal with humidity! I went to FL in the summer once and I was a mess!

I don’t know how you workin’ mamas do it! Always impressing me! I seriously need to try an Epsom salt bath. I keep saying I will and I keep putting it off.

LOL I already shipped you a pair 😉

  5. Girrrrllllll you know if eel ya on the sleep front! I think I need to make it my goal to just at least try and crack the 7 hour mark ech night! My problem is that I don’t know what else to do! I already go to bed REALLY early, I’ve just never den one who falls asleep easily.

Holy graduation! That’s so awesome though because you have so many cousins near your age! That seriously is super neat :))

    1. Oh man! I had that problem in college- I would go to bed early and then lay awake for 3 hours. Have you tried melatonin or tart cherry juice?

LOL holy graduation is right! I do actually love it 🙂

  6. Well if we ran as far and as fast as those elites, we’d need that much sleep! That’s cool about tracking your sleep. Ha, it sounds like you’re a worse sleeper than our toddlers. Dear lawd they move all over the place!

  7. no tempos for me–I’ve been cross training instead of running this week

I’ve gotten better about sleep–last year I averaged 6ish hours a night, but I’m averaging 7-8 now. The hardest part is making the decision to get ready for bed because I push it off. A friend was recently telling me that she gets ready for bed at 8pm so then it’s easier to actually go to bed by 9-10.

you were an adorable little kid!

  8. Rock just got a Fitbit too. So cool. I love at least 8 hours but probably do 7. I have found that doing acupuncture has really helped my overall sleep. It wasn’t why I went there in the first place but as an added bonus I fall asleep faster, sleep harder and don’t wake throughout the night. I need to get some of those business meetings in my schedule!

  9. Thanks for a marvelous posting! I certainly
enjoyed reading it, you could be a great author.I will always bookmark
your blog and will eventually come back very soon. I want to encourage one to continue your great work,
    have a nice day!
