Gluten-free for 30 days- Post experiment thoughts


Jogged another easy 3-miler (9:20 pace) with my pup. While I was stretching before the run, she came over to let me know that I should NOT forget her.

Rest day. Came home feeling exhausted, but then got an amazing package from the sweetest friend/blog twin Ashley.

She sent me gluten-free cookies (and a second package is coming) because my kitty is sick. Bloggers make the best friends. It seriously made me day. Love her.

Ran 7 miles- 2 mile warm up, 3 miles at 9:09 pace, 2 mile cool down. Hard. I’m out of shape.

Then met Kyle for Saturday bagels! Yep, we’re back to that! I’m officially done with my gluten-free for 30 days!

My thoughts after going gluten-free for 30 days:

1. It didn’t do anything for my sinuses. Had some major sinus issues while going gluten-free (the main reason for doing this experiment).

2. This wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I discovered that I don’t eat too much gluten to begin with. Most of my gluten consumption occurs when I don’t eat at home. But yes, eating out and NOT at home was difficult.

3. I have a lot of respect for my friends with Celiac Disease.Β I don’t eat out at restaurants too often, but I discovered how difficult it is to eat gluten-free when you aren’t at home. The shit is everywhere.

I found it difficult to ask if items were gluten-free (I felt like I was a pain). Plus some people just aren’t educated. I asked a waiter if a salad was gluten-free, they looked at me like I was an idiot and say yes, and then it comes out with sourdough croutons on it…

It’s also very difficult when you’re eating with people who don’t share the same issue (I guess in my case, non-issue). Sharing food gets complicated. I also found that some are insensitive and treat a health issue (health concern in my case) as a joke and inconvenience for them. <– another reason I wanted to do this experiment- so that I could walk a mile in someone else’s shoes so I don’t act like an insensitive boob.

4. Although I don’t think gluten causes any physiological Β issues in my body, I DO like the idea of eliminating a good amount from my diet. Like I said, I wasn’t eating too much gluten at home. But the gluten-filled items at home were processed things like sauces, crackers, etc. At restaurants or at work, things like fresh bread and homemade cookies were occasionally offered to me. All things that are better left out of my diet. Except that fresh baked bread. I will eat you.

Anyone run this weekend? How’d it go?

Anyone else think Ashley is the sweetest? If you answer no, we are no longer friends.

    b. I was able to run Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so I am starting this week of happy!
    c. LOVE your sweet pup in the picture above. What a cutie!
    d. I actually bought the 21-day detox book yesterday, so I’m planning to read that this week and hopefully begin a detox next week. (I am a majorrrrr carb craver!)

  2. I did paleo for 30 days, not because I was having any noticeable issues but to see if I would feel even better if I ate that way. I looked crazy skinny/ripped (despite only losing 2-3 lbs) but that was the only benefit. I didn’t feel any different in general and if anything, I felt worse while running. I just perform better and feel like I function at a higher level, with a carb heavy diet with lots of bread, pasta, etc. I went back to my old diet immediately after and my runs felt so much better. The only thing I do differently now because of it is consciously try to add more protein to my meals even when they are carb-based.

    1. Oh wow! That’s good that you tried it and now you know what you’re body prefers! I’ve heard from a couple runner friends that they perform better with a higher carb diet as well. They said they just felt sluggish when they eliminated most carbs.

  3. Thanks for sharing your gluten free experience. Very interesting. First of all Ashley is a doll. How sweet was that? I haven’t gone gluten free but I did go “carb” free the month before our wedding. While I did eat veggies and other things like that with some carbohydrates in them I did eliminate complex carbs like bread, cereal, pasta, crackers…you get it. I actually found my energy to be really great and I didn’t lose a lot of weight but I did look thinner. It wasn’t that hard for me as I rarely eat complex carbs. I did like the results!

  4. Ashley is a sweetheart, so we are STILL friends haha! She is probably a better friend than me since I didn’t send you cookies though. Next time, but it will be to celebrate something instead πŸ˜€ Last year, I gave up all sweets for Lent (so 40 days in other words). This year I decided to give up chocolate and cookies instead. To be honest with you, I really love it, even though I have a sweet tooth. I find it’s a perfect time to cut back on certain things to recover from winter’s free for all πŸ˜€ I hope your kitty is doing much better now! Oh and as for your puppy, I am super jelly! Aparently, it’s better that I don’t take mine for jogs until she is 1.5 y.o. not to affect her posture 😦 Bummer!

I get what you mean though, it is fun to eliminate certain items (even though it’s hard). Our bodies probably appreciate it πŸ˜‰ What a bummer that you can’t take your pup jogging yet (I’ve heard the same thing)- but it means you’re a good mama!

  5. Aww so sweet of Ashley! Interesting to read your thought on the gluten elimination. I did the 21 Day Sugar Detox and had great results but it just wasn’t practical to do all the time. Now, if I’m feeling grotty, I’ll try to reduce dairy and eliminate wheat and dairy, which seems to help.

    As for the gluten free experiment, I’m just excited that Saturday bagels is back! It’s my favorite, and I think the first time I saw you splitting your bagels into quarters so you got to try all different kinds was when I knew we were supposed to be friends. πŸ™‚

      LOL we were totally meant to be friends- those quarters of bagels were the best! I’m so happy Saturday bagels is back too! I gobbled up a sun-dried tomato one this weekend πŸ™‚

    I am right there with ya in the people with true gluten intolerances.
    One of my college roomies had Chrones and I have so much respect for her and what he so gracefully deals with like a champ!

    i ran on Saturday and my proposed 10 miler became a little-over-an-8-miler…woof. i feel you with the rough run. i hadn’t done a hilly outdoor course in a while, and i was underdressed and overworked from bootcamp on Thursday…so what i’m saying is, i’m realllllly prepared to run a half on Sunday. πŸ™‚ congrats on your 30 days being done! xo

  10. Nice job to all! There could’ve been gluten in the dressing too. When I visited my friend last year – she has to be gluten free for health reasons – it was a real pain going out to eat. And I felt a little bad after I drank a few beers and ate some pizza…just a little.

  11. Aww I love your pup!! They can communicate so well without words. Whenever I put on my running shoes, Toothless follows me around the house so I don’t forget him too. And he’s very matter of fact about it. Sorry your 30 day experiment didn’t work. That’s frustrating. Did you see any positive effects? Everyone seems to have some kind of good luck when they cut out gluten – more energy, less bloat, more focus, etc. When I did it, I was draggin’ ass! Screw Pinterest and their “get energy quick by drinking lemon water!” propaganda πŸ™‚

    1. Gawwww Toothless’ cousin Sienna does the same thing when I put on running shoes. They must smell or sound differently. My money’s on smell…
      I didn’t really see any positive effects from removing gluten (which I’m honestly happy about haha). But like I said, I wasn’t eating too much to begin with- so I don’t know. I didn’t see any boost in energy, but I also haven’t slept well in over a month so that could be why hahaha. I’ll just say we’re the 2 oddballs who were draggin’ ass without gluten.

  12. Nice work. I’m not sure I could say no to carbs for 30 days straight. Have you tried to cut out/reduce dairy – I think that it’s associated with a lot of low level inflammation? One of my good friend’s has Coeliac disease and eating out is such a pain for her. Some people are so uneducated about it – but a server should really know better by now.

    1. I actually was going to cut out dairy for 30 days too!!! I decided not to do it at the same time as gluten because if I noticed any changes, I wouldn’t know if it was due to eliminating gluten or dairy. I might do dairy in a little bit, but I need a break lol. I completely agree- a server should know about allergies and sensitivities, and if they don’t they should ask someone else.

  13. I’ve never tried an elimination diet, but thanks for sharing your gluten experience! Good point about having more respect for people who need to follow restrictions. I’m glad you and Kyle can have Saturday bagels again!

  14. I agree 100% with what you wrote, a lot of times I feel like I’m a pain, and so many times people are just uneducated. Sorry gluten free didn’t help your sinuses, but I’m glad you found it easier than you thought it would be! Glad you had a great run and yes, Ashley is super sweet!

  15. I really admire you on this one! I’ve done a few 10 day cleanses where I gave up sugar, wheat, alcohol, processed foods, etc. While I truly felt amazing while doing (and a little hungry!), I have never been able to stick to it for that much time.
